Seven markets, seven rulebooks

Online gambling is regulated country by country, and the differences are bigger than most players think. Here is the short version, with links straight to the official regulators so you can check every claim yourself.

  • Sweden

Sweden opened its licensed online casino market on 1 January 2019. Every legal casino is licensed and supervised by Spelinspektionen, and players can block themselves from all of them at once through the national self-exclusion register Spelpaus.

  • Norway

Gambling in Norway is run by state operators and supervised by Lotteritilsynet, the Norwegian Gambling Authority. Our Norwegian pages explain what that means for players in practice.

  • Finland

Finland is moving from a state monopoly to a licensing model, with a licensed market planned to open in 2027. Until then, many Finnish players choose casinos licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority.

  • Denmark

Denmark liberalised online gambling in 2012. Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, licenses every legal casino, and the ROFUS register lets players self-exclude from all of them.

  • Germany

The 2021 State Treaty on Gambling created a single national framework for online play in Germany, enforced by the GGL, the joint gambling authority of the German federal states.

  • United Kingdom

Every casino serving players in Great Britain must hold a licence from the Gambling Commission, and all licensed sites must be connected to the GamStop self-exclusion scheme.

  • International

The Malta Gaming Authority is one of the longest-established online gambling regulators in Europe and licenses casinos that serve players across many countries.

How we review

We only recommend casinos that hold a licence from a recognised regulator. Our reviewers open real accounts, deposit, play and withdraw before scoring a casino, and reviews are updated whenever terms, ownership or licensing change.

Gambling should be entertainment, nothing more. Every market section links to local responsible gambling resources and self-exclusion schemes such as Spelpaus in Sweden, ROFUS in Denmark and GamStop in the UK. You will find the logos of every regulator and player-protection organisation we reference in the footer below.
